Problem

Stress-induced damage was observed around mining abutments and brows, creating potential impacts on production drilling, ground support demand and safe access. The mine needed practical interpretation of where damage was developing and how it related to the modelled stress environment.

Scope

JM Geomechanics reviewed damage mapping, underground observations and modelled stress conditions to compare observed behaviour with predicted stress concentrations. The work helped identify high-stress zones and translate them into practical hazard controls.

Technical approach

  • Map visible damage, fracturing, broken ground and support performance indicators.
  • Compare mapped damage with modelled stress and differential stress conditions.
  • Review brow and abutment areas where stress changes were likely to affect access and production activities.
  • Identify areas where high abutment stresses could create drilling, support or re-entry concerns.
  • Provide operational recommendations for exclusion, monitoring and ground control communication.
